The Second Mile: A Charity Trapped In a Scandal

State College, Pennsylvania --- What is a charity to do when its founder is accused of child molestation? Well this is exactly the question in the case of The Second Mile founded by none other than Joe Paterno’s right hand man Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse with 8 boys over several years.

Founded in 1977 for at-risk youths, The Second Mile is faced with three options: 1. Resurrecting the company, 2. Transferring the programs to other groups for maintenance, or the dreaded option #3 of dissolution.

The acting CEO of the organization, David Woodle, has made a statement explaining that the group is “horrified” and rests most of their concern with the alleged victims and their families.

"As The Second Mile moves into its next phase, we will focus on helping the successful programs provided over many years continue. The overwhelming support we have received recently increases our motivation to achieve this goal," Woodle said.
